We selected the following rooms as good places to have intelligent conversations.
(Click "We..." at left for more detail.)
[matrix] rooms listed on this page are thought to satisfy the following criteria:
- The content is primarily text. (When people have face to face conversations, the interaction is verbal, not multimedia.)
- Posts for each topic are presented chronologically.
- For each post, the poster is identified in some way (so that you can get to know each poster by his or her posts).
- Replies can identify either the poster or the post being replied to.
- Posts are retained for at least a month (so that a complete record of a particular conversation exists throughout its life).
- Order is somehow maintained (e.g. by moderation or incentives such as punishment) to minimize bad behavior.
- In particular, there is no spam, including paid advertisements. (Exception: A chat room that expressly invites particular kinds of "on topic" ads.)
[matrix] is the best place to meet with others for intelligent, purposeful conversations.
[matrix] is a decentralized real time chat network that you can access for free.
It consists of "rooms" that any user can create and then administer.
Since control of each room is decentralized, and even the network is decentralized, there is no entity behind the room's administrator dictating how he or she must control speech within the room.
This means that the quality of the room as a forum for free speech depends entirely on the person who created and is administering the room.
[matrix] excels because its rooms can, depending on the room's administrator, satisfy the above criteria as follows:
- [matrix] room content is generally primarily text, although posts can include images or video.
- [matrix] room content is presented chronologically.
- For each post, the poster is identified. Replies and also private direct messages are supported.
- Replies identify the poster and optionally the post.
- [matrix] rooms and room content persist indefinitely.
- [matrix] room administrators can ban users and hide posts. Any room member can hide all posts of another member.
- The [matrix] system does not insert ads. When a member posts spam, it's up to the room's administrator to promptly remove it and ban the member.
